Goldfish ?
Hi everyone, cleaned my 75 gallon on Thursday...replaced a aqua clear 20 on the tank with a aqua clear 50 left the other original filter running a 70
anyway I also added a new bag of rocks...the tank became extremely cloudy and still appears on one side in a small spot to be somewhat cloudy...it took a long time for this cloudiness to improve...
One of my goldfish Micah (telescope eyed calico color) is now staying in one spot almost all of the time
This behavior is not typical for him....he does move about the odd time but it is very slow
He began doing this last night as far as I can tell...this evening I did a small water change thinking this may help. Just looking over at him now and he is still just sitting there...I might add he remains on the side where it appears most clear...could he have breathed something in? I am beginning to feel sick to my stomach thinking about him....The other 2 goldfish are fine...swimming about as they normally do......

Re: Goldfish ?
update since yesterday
did a small approx 20 % water change last night
Micah did seem to move about a bit more
was again this morning
in fact he was on the left side...the side I had mentioned was stil a little cloudy just in one small area
anyway we were out most of the day
he is now back on the right hand side sitting quite idle looking
he has never behaved in this before
he did eat last night
Sunday mornings our fish do not eat so I will see now this evening how it goes....he appears normal just normally not this idle
plan to do another water change tonight

Re: Goldfish ?
Do you happen to know the chemistry of the tank? Ammonia, etc. Just in case.
Do you see any physical signs of stress on the fish? Red gills, etc.

Re: Goldfish ?
checked ammonia levels on Thursday perfect!
will check again in a moment....
his body appears as far as I can tell to be normal...
I have been checking frequently....
will test water again this evening and also do another small water change to see if this may help......
thank you so much
we would be devastated if anything were to happen to him....

Re: Goldfish ?
my husband just put the tip of his finger in tank just near micah and micah responded immediately to my husbands presence, swam but them went back in idle position
my husband said, maybe he is depressed
going to check the water now ammonia and nitrites......
will keep an eye on him
maybe he is just feeling unwell and depressed
he is such a sweet little guy.....

ammonia perfect
nitrites 0
unfortunately I do not have the kit for nitrates
I have to purchase one....
did a small water change after the tests were completed
will continue to keep a close eye on him that's for sure
I really do wonder if he inhaled something from all that cloudiness?!
he used to love to explore the 2 large plants...I have not seen him doing this since I made all these changes on Thursday...wish I hadn't put the new rocks in now....mmmmm....

Re: Goldfish ?
Did he start acting this way before or after you put in the new filter? I just had this thought, because, if this behavior has happened after the filter, I wonder if you need to slow down the current. I am just reaching for any sort of explanation at this point for you. Otherwise, I would say, definitely get a test kit for nitrates. Just to cover all of the bases. And, as always, when in doubt, do frequent water changes. I hope the poor guy is okay.goldfishbetalover wrote:ammonia perfect

Re: Goldfish ?
I thought this as well...the new 50 is on the lowest speed...on the right hand side of the filter
and yes here is how it all took place
water change 1st...then I took the 20 off and added the 50
then I added the stupid bag of rocks....
I wish you lived closer to you could come with the test for nitrates....
I will have to go and get one tomorrow
put my hand in to show him his plants...he did swim over but now he is right back i the spot again
can't figure it out and he ate too! like always so I guess this is a good sign....

Re: Goldfish ?
this is just a thought and perhaps an odd one not certain
what if Oscar and Rose have formed a bond and Micah feels left out? could this be possible?
Update:
A new filter was placed on the tank an aqua clear 50...replaced a 20...so had 2 running
aqua clear 70 and the new 50
I turned the 50 off completely this evening...and a miracle happened right before my eyes....Micah began to swim around just like his old self...he is swimming about his plants and appears to be very happy!
It was the filter...the new one!!!!!!!! or at least seems to be that!

Re: Goldfish ?
So glad to hear that he is doing better. I will bring you one of my ground plant covers this week and show you how to tie it onto the filter so that there is not so much current coming from it. Again, so happy he's doing better! Yippy!

That sounds like a good idea. I remember you needing to do this before. That way one can still benefit from the filtration, without having the stronger current problem.

you have no idea how grateful and happy I am

Re: Goldfish ?
here is what I have::
Nutrafin max Goldfish Flakes
also have Wardley Goldfish Flakes
I also have Aqueon Goldfish Granules...I do not feed the granules as trhe flakes seemed easier with more than one fish in each tank
they are eating the Nutrafin Max Goldfish Flakes...all of them.....

Re: Goldfish ?
While I have no facts to back this up, I have heard that food high in protein can cause this.
I only feed flakes to the smallest of goldfish. I use a very small sinking pellet for the small ones and med and large floating pellets for the larger ones.
This is the small sinking pellets I use. While it says floating the small size mostly sinks.

Re: Goldfish ?
I get it at Pets mart or Pets Unlimited, they both carry it. I was at one Pets Unlimited location recently and they had it put away for the season for some reason, but they went out back and got me a couple of bags.
It's also available at Kent, but check the dates on it as I was at a kent store recently and all their food had expired at least a year ago.
