"Poop" floating on top of my 75 gallon...
I have noticed a small bit of debris floating at the top of my 75 that houses the black moore and 2 fancies
not alot of "poop" just a bit every now and then
wondering if it is the food they are eating
have had them since last summer, they have been eating the same type of food since coming to live in our home and never noticed anything like this before...
any suggestions re a good type of goldfish food
they all eat flakes now! ie the comets and others
maybe a low level of protein is needed?
thnx in advance

What sort of filtration are you running?

Garry, is my filtration not sufficient to meet their needs?

ok
I think I may go out and get a seeded sponge filter....think this may help?
I also have another submersible triangle type filter with sponge only...they are both fairly large I can turn this one on as well as the other one
did have both of them going initially but one of them seemed to be blowing Oscar the black morore he is much bigger now so perhaps wouldn't be blown around as much

Re: "Poop" floating on top of my 75 gallon...
I'm not too sure what it means when poop floats...hmmm...I too was thinking maybe food in that they might need a little more variety, or maybe that type is expanding in their bellies - but I guess neither really explains why it is floating!
Maybe, pull some water out of the tank and put it into a bucket and give the media in one of the filters a rinse, see if anything is clogged. Also, give the intake tube a rinse. If it makes a difference, then you can do the same with the other filter next water change.
It might be an idea to replace that submersible filter with another HOB or sponge filter, especially where it doesn't hold a lot of media (at least from what I remember? Correct me if I am wrong!). Or better yet, maybe replace the aquaclear 20 with a bigger one, say a 50.
In the end, it seems that more filtration is always better with goldies, so adding one or upgrading the smaller one wouldn't hurt
As I think more about it, I think I would opt to swap out the 20 and replace it with a bigger one...

Re: "Poop" floating on top of my 75 gallon...
the pet shop just 10 minutes away has filters I am pretty certain
so I am getting ready now to go down there to see what they have
when I am in town again I will also get a sponge filter...I know they do not sell these down there certainly not seeded media
and yes the submersible ones only hold the sponge...and a tiny bit of media...not much room

A 75 gal tank with three small goldfish in it?
The Aquaclear 70 and 20 are more then enough filtration. If you had more goldfish in there and noticed your ammonia starting to climb, then that would be a good sign that you have an issue.

Re: "Poop" floating on top of my 75 gallon...
mmm...so I wonder what may have been causing the floating "poop"!?
I have purchased an aqua clear 50...just this morning
Placed it in the tank and removed the 20...unplugged both filters to do my weekly water change turned everything back on and the 70 would not run
strange thing is the entire tank went VERY cloudy....
after the water change I added a small bag of new rocks rinsed them 1st
had to leave the tank with just the new 50 running as I could not get the 70 going...
when my husband came in he was able to get the 70 going almost instantly...not sure what I was doing wrong
anyway the cloudiness is improving but the tank is not anywhere near as crystal clear as it was before I did the water change
I keep looking over to make sure Oscar, Micah and Rose are still alive and swimming around
my tanks are ALWAYS crystal clear
Shell can attest to this\
now I am concerned about the cloudiness
was out this evening at parent teacher interviews for our son and since coming home looks a little better

Re: "Poop" floating on top of my 75 gallon...
UPDATE!
75 appears to be near crystal clear....
70 and 50 aqua clear filters are both running on it
not so bad that I replaced the 20 as I have put it on the 20 gallon with the 2 rescues...this provides more filtration for them with the 1st filter running as well....
thanks so much everyone for your help!!!!
I guess cloudiness may happen from time to time Shell informed me but boy it never happened like this before and lasted so very long...I did place a small ag of new rocks in as well after cleaning so Shell said this may have caused it
still learning!!!!!lol

Re: "Poop" floating on top of my 75 gallon...
You'll have a better turn over rate with the 50 and the 70 running. You really can't overfilter a tank.
I like my AC, but on occasion it can be a little finicky to start. Glad you got it going.

Re: "Poop" floating on top of my 75 gallon...
both filters still running well
continue to see form time time bacteria floating though at top...
has anyone ever had this happen?
I am now beginning to wonder if there may be a link to Micah's behavior (post Goldfish ?) and this bacteria issue
it is not alot of bacteria floating at all
but enough that as w e pass by we see it from time to time
always though it just simply sank to the bottom
perhaps it does someX float?
