Question re my friends new fish?????
my girlfriend had a 5.5 tank set up as folk know from a previous post
she had a female Betta on her own for approx 4-5 days
then added one guppy and 2 glowlite tetras...
she has purchased 2 more tanks
also 1 more guppy and 3 more tetras....
both new tanks are set up with seeded media and she has moved the original guppy into her new tank and the origianl tetras into their new tank
now has added the "new fish" and tells me the originals are chasing or bullying the other fish...she says the newcomers are staying on one side and the originals are swimming about looking quite delighted with themselves
any thoughts from anyone
is this perhaps normal pecking order that is happening?
thnx so much in advance!
she did tell me their is one tank where the bullying appears to be more noticeable I just can't seem to recall which one she said though...I think she may have said the tetras...hope this all makes some sense....

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
just spoke to my girlfriend and all is well with the tetras
the guppies...there are just 2 of them not so
the original guppy appears to be fine
the new guppy is remaining in one corner or section of tank and not swimming...she says she has something hanging out of her
initially she thought this may be poop but now says she does not think so
if it weren't so late I would go over will probably go tomorrow and have a look...

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
You need more info before you know. Hopefully what is hanging out is not a bright red worm. That would be a very bad thing...
I hope it all settles with time and darkness.

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
Sounds like tankmates are bullying the poor fish. If the stringy exudate is from the anal fish area, it could be waste due to many causes, and this does not seem healthy. The fish will need to be isolated, if not to prevent further harassment, but to give it time to recuperate. Perhaps a plastic container on top. As this is a 5.5 gallon, there is not a lot of room to work with, so she will have to judge the space.goldfishbetalover wrote:

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
it is a 10 gallon...
she says that she is still sitting in the same spot
I will have to take her my small box tomorrow if this might be the solution....

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
Thanks for the correction, 10g. At least it will help give the fish time to build up strength. As to releasing back into the 10g, perhaps consider another alternative mix of fish in the three tanks. Three tanks are a great start to a lifetime of hobby enjoyment. As the two tanks are new, you can expect some crazy water cycling to happen in the next few weeks even with seeded media.

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
she has a 10 gallon with 2 guppies
a 10 gallon with 5 glowlite tetras and a 5.5 with one female betta
more fish in any of them would be overstocking wouldn't it? other than the 5.5 which I know she wants to leave as is....

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
None of those tanks look like a serious concern for overstocking if they were mature; except that they still have to cycle through, being new. Keep as is for now until the tanks stabilize and the fish get settled. The guppy does concern me, but I recently nursed back a small limia from a poor state, so turnaround is very achievable.

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
she is now telling me she is concerned that the white substance may be a parasite
I will take my test kit over tomorrow and check the levels in her tank or probably all of them...as she does not have a testing kit yet.....

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
Without pictures this is a tough diagnosis, but I suspect the fish is wasting and the stringy thing is an indication of poor health. I am more inclined to feed live food to restore some energy, but then it is a tough call. You are probably the best judge for her right now as we are far too distant and do not fully understand what is going on.

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
I doubt if the issue is bullying. White stringy waste says the fish arrived ill, especially since it is a pet store guppy. Illness is pretty common with them.
It's not a good sign the fish is lying around. A key thing is whether it will be up and moving today (in which case it has a chance) or if it's still down (in which case chances are extremely slim).
I'd get some high fibre food in to it, and probably dose it with an anti parasitic. The catch is your friend will spend 3 times the price of the fish to treat it, with no certainty she is treating the right thing. If it is a bacterial infection, then the fish would be a goner with those symptoms no matter what she does.

Re: Question re my friends new fish?????
Guppies are like birds. I expect they only attack the weak. I see zero aggression, other than the incessant courting, in my guppy group. But if a fish begins to linger in any of my tanks, it will do everything in its power to hide the weakness. It fears predators, but it also fears its companions.
Its companions seem to be wired to fear it, or its illness.
Birds can be absolutely brutal with that. The last of my "rescue" zebra finches, Atticus, died last week. They were dropped at a dog shelter a few years ago, and I took them home. I could tell old age was taking Atticus down, and I knew from experience with birds that he was a day at most from death when I found him. I'm convinced a person who hadn't kept birds might have bought him the week before his death - he was hiding the illness that well. My daughters and I all spotted the inevitable, but that was from hard experience.
A lot of newcomers to aquariums end up with dying fish. The cycle gets blamed, but there are a lot of doomed fish for sale out there.
