Blyxa Japonica

Blyxa japonica is a beautiful species and fairly new to the aquarium hobby. It is moderately demanding. B.japonica can be maintained without CO2 supplementation, but it often appears leggy, and individual plants can be quite thin and unattractive. When conditions are not to its liking, it will often shed older leaves at their attachment to the stem. High light levels are needed as well as CO2, macronutrients, and micronutrients. This plant can tolerate a small degree of shading and will take on a dark green coloration in these conditions. Under intense lighting, the individual leaves will take on a reddish hue, and the plant will be more compact in appearance.
This plant is well suited for nature-style aquariums. It works well to soften the margins of hardscape materials and is well suited to act as a transition between shorter foreground species and taller, traditional stem plants. Growth is modest, and it does not send runners like many other grassy species. Every month the individual plants can be uprooted and gently separated at the connection points of the stem structure. It is helpful to leave at least a few roots on each cutting. This plant grows very well for me and makes nice bushy growth. A must have for tanks that support this species. Cool

I really like this plant but it hasn't done well for me and as a result it used to disintegrate (too low light, low ferts). Maybe now that my light levels are higher, I could try again...

This defiantly not a low light plant. And this plant will do very well if you give it root tabs for ferts. I currently have auction of this up right now. So now is your chance. Smile

Can't wait for those blyxa to show signs of growth. Wow! I didn't realize these plants grew 12" tall. Amazing info in the video. Thanks!

I am really glad you enjoyed the video. New plants will take time to root in and I have only got blyxa to grow to the huge size of 12" on a rare occasion under perfect conditions for the plant. A rich substrate is a must for this plant. A beautiful plant for sure.
