Drum Roll Please......OR What Have I Done?
Either I am nuts or have a huge heart
perhaps a bit of both...
After all I do own 7 greyhounds (at one time had 14)
Saw an ad on kijiji for 2 goldfish
the tank came along with them
located just a short drive from our home
sooooo...off I went...telling myself I was just going to look
When I got to the house the poor fish were in a tiny 5 gallon tank...and they were big...big ie. compared to the small comets we have
I stood there trying to figure out what to do
well I knew what I had to do...
so they came home with me
I took the tank too knowing they could not go back in it
the 20 gallon is at the moment not empty
it is the temporary home of "Red" and ""Black Fin" named by our children
I am thinking I will put them in with the 2 fancies and black moore....?????
aqua advisor says the 75 gallon would be 106% stocked...no warnings though....

The problem with rescue is the need to provide a better home longterm. What you have is way better than a 5 gallon, but longterm, unless you kill your enjoyment of the hobby with endless water changes, you are going to need 30 gallons per goldie...
If I rescued every fish I wanted to pull out of awful conditions, I'd have to flood the house.
Hmm, if I leave the taps on....

I should add that the real purpose of my post was to find out whether putting them in the 75 is a good solution or not?! (it houses 2 fancies and one black moore)

if new goldfish are not fancy goldfish, they are not compatible because they will eat all of the food before fancy types have the chance too. They are also much more active.

Re: Drum Roll Please......OR What Have I Done?
I love it you just can't resist (says the guy who is picking up 7 more goldfish this weekend)
I have no issue mixing fancy and single tailed goldfish together. I just make sure they can get to the food. The small ones I feed a sinking pellet so the food comes right to them.
This a 275gal tank i have with about 60-70 mixed Koi/goldfish. You can see there is a small fantail and an Oranda in there hanging tough with the speedsters.

Re: Drum Roll Please......OR What Have I Done?
maybe what I should do for the time being is find a larger tank than the 20 for the 2 new additions
just dbl checked with my husband and he says one of them the larger of the 2 is about 2.5 inches long
looks huge to me compared to our little ones!!!!
in the next year we are definitely upgrading to one huge tank for everyone...
sooo....much to think about!
who knows maybe there is also a pond in my future....
I have been looking closely at our basement and although it is only partially finished could house one massive tank that's for sure!

Basements are wonderful. They hold big tanks and comfy armchairs....

... and no worries at to whether or not the floor joists will sustain the weight of a large tank.GaryE wrote:Basements are wonderful. They hold big tanks and comfy armchairs....

Re: Drum Roll Please......OR What Have I Done?
In all seriousness - if you are planning to keep going with a number of tanks, you would be surprised how easy it is to maintain them when they are together. Most basements have floor drains, which are great for water changing, and you can easily rough in an inexpensive wall or four to keep tank heating costs down (or to dispense with heaters altogether). You can have a central air pump, central lighting - yes, it's an initial expense, but it works out over time.
You can even put a door on it and finally not be obliged to deal with visitors thinking you are nuts. When visitors here aren't fish or animal people, I close the door and they don't even notice the fishroom's there. It saves a lot of explaining. When those who get it come by, the door is always open.
If you arrange it to have somewhere to sit and watch the fish, it's a nice little cave. Man caves are over-rated - human caves are better!
