So all my planted tanks seem to be getting a clear goop in the filter pads and stuff. Really slows down filters and feels pretty oily. Normal? A sign of something? Tanks seem healthy otherwise.

What's the routine on filter cleaning? How long have you noticed it? It's not something I have personally seen, hopefully someone will have an answer for you.

My first thought might be bacteria or some sort of algae. Are there lots of snails in the tank? Snail eggs?

Snail eggs or biofilm? For the first, good luck, for the second, up the water changes a bit. I can't think of what else it would be, unless it's food related. What do you feed them?

Thanks for chiming in. Water changes. 10-20% about once every 10 days. Filter cleaning is randomn... rinsing media in tap water. Staggered cleaning of different types of media.

When I have overfed, I have sometimes had slime bombs on uneaten food.Usually , it has a pale version of the food's colour though.

Thanks for the posts... I am going to get a picture of it next time I clean. I don't think its uneaten food as I feed once a day a very small amount in these tanks.
