Question regarding filter buzzing Empty Question regarding filter buzzing

Post by Sandman1969 Sun Jan 18, 2015 12:05 pm

By buzzing, I am referring to the buzzing noise the impeller makes. Does this sound bother the fish? The fish in question being my koi & fan tailed goldfish. They look healthy, swim around for the most part. But now and then, they will "lay" on the far side of the tank on the opposite side of the filter.

I think I need to find a replacement shaft for it, or a new impeller or both.

Any thoughts?

Sometimes it is just sand in the impeller. I've also gone to check and found impeller shafts worn as thin as sewing needles in places. It is more often the shaft than the impeller unit, if it is wear.

I don't know if the fish are bothered. Near or far, they would get the vibrations. I'd be more inclined to think they dislike the flow-rate.

I would think that anywhere they would experience the same buzzing. Sound travels very efficiently in water. Actually travels faster in water than in air.

I was just curious to know if there would be any harm since they were laying at the opposite end of the tank. They do seem pretty healthy and are healthy eaters as well.

Also, on a side note, would shrimp pellets be bad as a snack for the koi & goldfish? I feed them mostly Hikari Lionhead sinking pellets.
