sponge filter as prefilter on ac70
I have a 37 gallon tall tank that is semi-heavily densely planted and it is currently stocked with yellow jacket endlers, a BNP and a couple cories. I run a HOB AC70 and an ATI Hydro sponge filter in addition to a couple air-stone bars. I am running a AC filter sponge attached to the intake as a prefilter.
I know that my tank is good filtration wise, but my question is has anyone used a sponge filter as a prefilter on the ac70. I know you can use powerheads but i am thinking of trying to find an adapter to attach the sponge filter directly to the AC70 intake. That way i maintain good bio-filtration and waterflow without the ugly white prefilter.
just a thought, has anyone been successful and if so where did you get the adapter. Google couldn't help me this morning, perhaps not enough coffee.
Cheers

Re: sponge filter as prefilter on ac70
I do all the time. I even have bulk foam that I cut as needed. If I don't I have mystery snails that get sucked into the intakes and die. You may find the flow from the ac70 occasionally reduced to a trickle, but all that is needed is to remove the pre-filter sponge, rinse and relocate on the intake.
Good luck.
Good luck.

sorry if i wasn't clear. I was thinking of actually attaching the ATI Hydro sponge filter directly to the AC70 to avoid just using a sponge pre-filter. So a filter attached to a filter intake.

Yes, but you won't be able to run air, so it essentially becomes a prefilter. Go for it.. don't run the air thought, as you'll just be sucking bubbles into the ac filter, potentially causing issues at the impeller side.

I use Fluval Edge (black) fine mesh pre-filters on my AC filter intakes. Fits the AC 20, right up to the AC 110. Usually available at PetSmart stores.
