Driftwood floating!

I have used several pieces of driftwood in my time. Most of my tanks have them. I generally buy mopani, but this stuff is different, not as dark and thinner. Not sure of the type. I have had it in the QT tank for about six hours now, and it is still floating at the top. I soaked it for about 12 hours prior. Is this a dud? Or do I let it float some more?

Agreed. Some driftwood takes a long time to become waterlogged and sink.

I have had wood that's taken weeks to sink. I tried to speed it along by holding it underwater with a large plate. still took forever. patience! and weighing it down somehow!

Hold it down with some rocks, it will eventually stay down. I had a piece stay floating for months.. it was a rather large root though.

If you can figgure out about how much weight it takes to keep it submerged - you can find out by floating it in the bathtub and placing a piece/pieces of rock/slate/or other material.

I use a brick I found on a demolished house site.
It has 3 - 1 1/4 inch holes in it.
Thin wood I stick through the holes till it is water logged from 3 to 15 weeks so far.

Pieces too large to tread into bring I weigh down with some large rocks

I had to weigh down my more recent piece of wood with a decoration for about a week and a half before it sank. It's good now, it can sometimes take some time.

Okay - thanks everyone! I knew that some people have had driftwood float for a bit, but I guess I didn't realize it could float for weeks - I thought maybe an hour or so! I guess I've just lucked out with this stuff up until now Wink

I'll still take a pic after coffee...gotta wake up first Very Happy

It is certainly not fancy (I only paid $2 for it from a local club member!). I might see if hubby can attach it to a piece of slate, we have a few pieces here.
