End of summer season, Begining of Fish season Empty End of summer season, Begining of Fish season

Hello Folks,

I take it you all had a great summer doing whatever it is you folks do! For myself, I was very busy building a detached garage in the backyard of my home, combined with lots, and my mean lots, of gardening. I wrapped up the last of my vacation and have now started to settle down for winter (or paying off my summer expenses, same thing really)

With the fall rains, I have started to notice more activity in the fishroom. My 6 year old Sterbai cories have started laying eggs again (they do this during spring and fall) and I have started collecting eggs again for the first time since may. I have a mops and a few bunches of plants covered in eggs currently in the hatching bucket, awaiting some fry in the next few days. The first of my peat bags was wetted and the killifish fry are happily swimming in a 5 gallon grow out. I even started to notice a couple of angels have paired off and are sporadically laying eggs here, there and everywhere.

Anyone else just getting geared up for fish season? What have you been up to this summer, since I didn't really spend much time inside, let alone on the computer.

Hi Vince
Great to have you back after a very eventful summer for you ! We are just about one year old, but stay tuned on this one. The Plant Section is really moving ahead and we have some very interesting fish profiles (killies too) and adventures from the usual and some new, cast of players.

Recently some members have had questions about their angels. You may want to search for the topics, as there are a few references.

Sterbai cories ! Awesome. They are one of my favourites and if you have some to trade/sell I would love to get some.

The biggest plan we have is to get our new 55g up and running, we have a few adopted fish waiting in temporary smaller tanks to go into their forever home!

Good luck with your fry! Very Happy

I LOVE my Finnex LED lights with moonlights, EXCEPT I keep all my lights on timers which means the blues go off when the main light does.
I ended up buying a bunch of cheapie blue led strips from Walmart and use those on a different outlet.
Just got back from three nights in a tent and I sure missed those soft, blue lights and gently moving fish!!!

For me the summer hasn't been a lost season fish wise. I got involved in a project on protecting a rare local Profundulus species in Mexico, I did my first dry start method tank and several make overs of existing tanks. I also acquired some new fish.

Here it is still warm so breeding wise not many fish are being triggered yet. Actually I need the warm weather to entice my dwarf gouramis to breed!

Well, the end of Pond season is just around the corner, so for me it's that annual issue of where to put everyone for the winter. I managed to keep the 1200 empty for the summer, so all I need to do is build the new filtration system for that tank. That should hold the fish in the ponds.

The new Japanese koi I acquired this season should be fine in there tanks for the winter, though I hope to sell a few more yet before winter sets in.

I do have 100 one year old domestic koi arriving this week or next that have no home as of yet. They might have to hang out in a 55G for a few weeks until plan B can be formulated. I told myself never again, but I had people looking for cheap Koi this season and I never had much to offer.

It probably means the end of the comets and common goldfish in my tanks. They will have to be shipped off to the local pet store for credit. I have about 25 or so non Koi out in my ponds that are really part of the family that I can't part with, but the ones that have been born in the tanks here at work will have to go.

I have my order in for groups of Showa, Kohaku and Shusui for next Mar. They will come out of the mud ponds in Japan this fall. This will complete the 7 varieties that I plan to try breeding, probably not until the spring of 2015. Going to keep them all warm this winter to maximize growth. Then give them a cold spell next winter and hope for a spawn in the Spring of 2015.

Steve,
It seems like just yesterday that we were reading about your efforts to get the fish outside, now you have to turn around and bring them back in. To bad you did not have a revolving aquarium carousel to go in and out and in and out. Arrow  What a job! Good luck finding a spot for them all. And congrats on the new shipments coming in.
