We were in town shopping this afternoon and went into the pet shop to have a look around....while there our children were drawn to one tank in particular that had very tiny...I mean very tiny baby guppies...they were drawn to them as I was as well....sooooo...we decided that perhaps we would bring a few home...they gave them to us for free.
Hoping they will do well...picked up the special baby food for fish...they are black in color....are baby guppies normally black in color? anyone know?

Guppies aren't usually black. There's a breeder selected form of molly that is, and they breed easily, llike guppies.

Maybe you got mollies? I'm prejudiced - I like them a lot more than guppies. Now that is a fish with character - black mollies are what got me hooked as a kid.

There are all kinds of cultivated guppy forms, and snob for wild fish that I am, I don't usually give them a close look. If it's one of the dark form guppies, they might have pigment, but it's not likely on a baby as I believe it comes in later in life. It does on wild-types, which are beige til just around maturity.

I have often seen baby mollies in stores though. They seem to survive there better than baby guppies do, and a couple of times, I bought them for next to nothing, just to give them a chance at life, and see what they became.

I'd have to agree with Gary. Baby guppies (no matter the strain) are generally greyish, with the colour coming in as they grow. Black baby livebearers are usually mollies.

I'm eager to seek pics if you can manage to get some. (I'm partial to mollie as well.)

JUST AN UPDATE ON OUR MYSTERY FISH!
ooops sorry about the caps!
there were 5 fish...all of them were black very tiny!!!
now there are 7 fish...all still very tiny but grown somewhat
5 of them are black the other 2 are extremely clear....
they look like 2 completely different types of fish
I have taken photos but believe me they are not good at all
Shell was here or at least near our community yesterday attending our sons Christmas concert
although she did not see the mystery fish as we were at the school I did show her the photos on my camera...ie just of the black fish because this was lal we thought was in the tank
What I can't sort out is how the other 2 got there as I climatized them 1st, then placed all of the fish in a small one gallon tank before I netted them and placed them in the tank they are in now....
anyway that's it for now.....

yet another update...perhaps folk have not had opportunity to see my previous update post!

anyway we can see just 4 fish at the moment still quite tiny but each of them now look quite different in terms of comparing them....one of them is sort of a grey color the other looks like a guppy clear color with the belly like a guppy...the 3rd somewhat clear and the 4th round shape clear sort of color with a black face or black up near his little face on the top of his head...we have no idea where the other 3 are..perhaps they will turn up?
I do have a large plant in there so they may be hiding?
we have also discovered just this morning a little ghost shrimp...at least we believe this is what it is...we have named him Bubbles and have named the entire tank our "MYSTERY TANK"!!!!!!!!!

That's hilarious! Kind of an interesting tank you have going on there - guppies? Mollies? Shrimp? I wonder what else will pop up in there!!

75F?

Do you have a heater in that tank or is that just from the room heat?

oh ok, don't know much about Mollies of Guppies or what temperature to keep them at.

Goldfish by nature are a cold water fish and thrive in oxygen rich cooler water. The warmer the water the less dissolved oxygen there is in the water. 75F is probably at the high end of what is comfortable for goldfish, they are happier in the 65-70 range.

They can survive at 75F or even higher, they will just complain more Smile
