Question regarding Weathersheild silicon

Has anyone ever had it start to peel off whatever you have it sealed to? This is the "safe for aquariums" stuff as well. When I made the pieces, I spread some on the inside & the outside to make sure it was sealed.
I used it to make a 90 degree piece for the output of my 10 gallon tub filter & it's held for the last few years. Until yesterday.
The tub started to overflow & come to find out, some of the silicon has peeled off enough to where it started to block the output fixtures.

I have since cleared the inside of the blockage & my ID shark is happy to have his bubbles back. I shut it down while I was at work in case it started again as I had no time to resolve it as I had to leave for work when it happened.

I have used plenty of that brand, no probs. Silicone should be used only as a sealant though, not as an adhesive as it has really very little inherent strength. It is also best used on glass only, it doesnt adhere very well to acrylic or plastic.

I used it on PVC parts. The outside is still nicely solid and leak free.

PVC is a type of plastic, you should really use specialized PVC glue or sealant (i think it is the purple stuff) as that is a chemical reaction that melts the 2 pieces of PVC together.

I only use GE branded silicone 1 where it is 100% silicone with no additives.

But just how aquarium safe would that stuff be? I have a feeling that it wouldn't be at all.

the pvc glue is safe for drinking water once cured, thus safe for aquariums. Most silicone mixes are more dangerous than that.

I avoided using the pvc sealants when i was building my palu out of fear of what it would do to the fish and used silicon instead. now I wish I had read more about it and realized it was safe. sandman, if you just go to Rona or home depot or wherever and ask for drinking safe sealant for ABS or PVC they will know which product you should use. make sure if you are using the right sealant for the type of plastic you are using tho.

the glues used for gluing PVC will off gas / release the solvents used in the cleaning and gluing.

I allow at least 24 hours for the vapors to relase.

I blow out any lines I glued up with a vacume cleaner.
The warm air will help flush out any residual solvents.

Rince and flush out all plumbing before using!

I need to make a correction.
When I bought these parts for my 10g filter from the Home Depot super store, I was under the impression that they were PVC. Turns out that they are actually poly instead.
So I ended up getting a tube of that silicone again for it.

But any ideas on a solvent/glue/cement for poly??

PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride. Most plastic pipes are either PVC or ABS.

Plastic pipe is yes, but he called it Poly pipe which i associate with the flexible black poly pipe. This type of pipe uses insert fittings and clamps as compared to a glue to connect the fittings.

No, not the black stuff. I was told not to use the black stuff/ABS plastics.

On the shelf, the sticker just says Poly and it's gray.

these fittings are for black poly pipe,

They are insert fittings that insert inside the pipe not each other and go together with hose clamps not glue.

We use tons of those here at work, below is an example our how they are used.

That tool from Home Hardware has no business working in a hardware store then. He had No clue what he was talking about.
The sticker on the shelf & on the parts just said it was "poly". Not PVC or anything else. He stated he didn't think that pvc sealant or glue would work.

Well actually he's right,

These fittings will not glue together. You might be able to get fittings of different sizes to fit inside one another and get it to be water tight with silicone or some kind of glue. However these are polyethylene insert fittings and they are meant to be put together with clamps.

Some insert fittings for polyethylene pipe are actually made from PVC (still not intended to be glued together) but the ones you have in the picture are not.

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but what is it exactly that you are trying to rig up?

if you are using the connectors in the photo those are for connecting the black polyetheline pipe.

I would use threaded connectors that screw together
to make your reducing 90 degree bend you would use a reducing bushing with a threaded 90 elbow.

I'm using 2 of these already on my 10 gallon tub filter for the output of the water as it filters upwards through the tub & out.

As you can see, there's 2 in use now at the top connected to 2 vinyl hoses. It does work well for this. It's just that I wanted something more secure when I tighten them in.
