US shopping Empty US shopping

Post by Biulu Thu Oct 24, 2013 8:12 am

In about 2 weeks' time I will be going to the US for a few days. One of the persons we are visiting has indicated that she is willing to 'receive stuff' for me. In other words I can use her address as a shipping address to receive goodies.

I will definitively buy a nice LED light for one of my tanks, but what else are good products that I should be buying?

Very good idea! It's nice to have friends south of the boarder that will not only be your friend and offer companionship but also receive goods for you! Which LED fixture are you looking at?

I will be buying the Finnex like you have, but a smaller size.

Good idea! I'm quite happy with mine. In terms of bang for your buck I think they're the way to go aside from building your own.

I have a small rimless 5 gallon that I have wanted to set up for ages now. Unfortunately, they took the 3rd rock for it from my luggage in Mexico....

The idea is to turn this tank into a typical landscape from north Vietnam (Son La province)

Does that entail lots of moss/baby tears and rocks?  They are very attractive scapes! I look forward to seeing it get started! I was hoping to change my ten gallon over to a three rock dwarf baby tear aquascape at some point.  But then I'd have to scrap some plants.... Perhaps I should set up the 20G!

I was in the US last week and again in the next few weeks and as I am travelling by plane I have few options regarding carrying my purchases. I am disappointed by the availability often here in Canada and I realise that this is for different reasons. The US market has enjoyed better purchasing capacity and can provide for so many more options. I had hoped that NAFTA and recently CETA would improve the purchasing power.

Enjoy the trip and I look forward to hearing about the goodies.

Regarding NAFTA: Canada is the country that is the clear loser in this deal. I have seen how both Mexico and the US have profited from it and especially Mexico has gained lots of jobs. Canada on the other hand is now the only developed country I know of that exports raw materials without requiring at least a first processing. Not even African countries allow that....

We are 2 persons with a bag allowance of 23 kgs for 4 days only... That should allow for something to be brought back...

No problem getting you LEDs Steve, you would only have to pick them up personally in Montreal Very Happy. And then I finally have the opportunity to get you to work on some of these DIY projects that have been sitting here for some time....

Then you are at the right address! Sometimes I suspect that my better half married me because of my cooking...

My favourite dishes come from Indian and Indonesian cuisine and I also do a lot of free style European food.

You are welcome: I think that Indian food is one of the easiest to cater for more people or to deal with unexpected guests...

Biulu - take a look at some of the big mail order houses, and order what appeals to you there. Store prices for aquarium stuff in the US have been higrer than in Montreal for 10 years now, but mail order is still cheap. There are also great fish food options.

I believe that. Even here in Canada mail order stuff with shipping cost is often cheaper than store prices. I'm mostly referencing hardware and plants as I haven't bought any livestock online.
