Thew new apartment we moved into late last year does not have air conditioning. So I am curious as to what, if anything, should be done for the tank that is home to the one comet goldfish & one koi?

The ID shark tank should be ok with the higher temps I would assume.

where is Steve when you need him? From what I know they may not like the heat but should withstand it as long as it is not to hot (80+). I hope Steve will answer soon he will know their upper temp. limits.

actually I am working 14-16 hours a day right now so, not much time for anything else other then flowers this week. I hope all the Mother's out there appreciate all the work we do Smile

Goldfish/Koi are cold water fish, actually I refer to Koi as being cool water fish, they can't take it as cold as goldfish can. they both love oxygen rich cooler water. The higher the temperature the less dissolved oxygen there is in the water. My personal recommendation is 68-74F. Having said that they can survive in warmer water, but like us they become very uncomfortable the higher the temperature gets. 86F would probably be the max i would keep a goldfish for any length of time. even for treating Ich I usually only suggest 84F for no more then two weeks.

We don't get that hot here, but I have heard of people dropping a freezer pack in there tank each morning before they go to work as a way of keeping the temperature down. I have never tried it myself so I can't comment as to the range of temperature swings this might create. One thing is for sure, you want to make sure you have plenty of air in the tank at the higher temperatures.

good luck,

Steve

That tank has 2 HoBs & a canister filter all breaking the water. No air pump to help add air as I cannot seem to find that one.
It got to 25 cel here today & the shark tank was upwards of 80 cel.

I was doing that last year when my fiance was buying bottled water. But since we moved, I no longer do that, so have no bottles to use.

Just looked at the koi/goldfish tank & the temp is 84 cel right now.
The issue now is that the sun is more direct into that side of my apartment starting late afternoon when I am at work.

The first things I do under these circumstances is turning off the lights of the tank as these generate heat. I also open up the tank (remove lid) and close the curtains as to not allow the sun in.

I also do lots of water changes with cold water....

Even if you don't use bottled water anymore, you can take any plastic bottle to fill it up with water from the tap and freeze it.

Curtains have been closed since yesterday. Lids are not real lids. On the shark tank, one side is just an overhead light grating while the other side is a styrofoam lid that is just there to prevent them from jumping. No lights on the tanks. I filled a few plastic containers with water & am freezing them now.
Can't do any water changes til tomorrow.

Well, I had filled 3 tupperware containers of water & stuck them in the freezer. Today I dropped one in each of the tanks. They melted fairly quick. SO I can't see that being a workable method. As of this post, the shark tank is 82F whereas the goldfish/koi tank is upwards of 86F.
That tank has lots of surface water breakage due to having 2 HoBs & a canister filter. Shark tank has the tub filter above the tank breaking the surface along with an air pump.

I don't know what to suggest. You are in a bind, as you are seeing those temps, and it's only May. I generally choose fish for the conditions of the house - with my killies, I have different species than when I had a cooler basement. But going into a very hot apartment with indoor goldfish, and monster fish - it is going to be a lot of work to keep them alive. All of a sudden, the entire game changes with a situation like that.

In the long run, you may need to consider rehoming some of the fish and replacing them with fish tolerant of a wider temperature range, as well as less current/less oxygenated waters. I guess you'll have to see how they take it over the summer. Maybe they will soldier through.

This is the first place since having fish that didn't have AC.
As of 1:22PM in Sw Ontario, the temps have not changed as they were in my last post.
The water actually feels cooler than it says.

I got an idea for a home made chiller.
For my 125G goldfish/koi tank, I have my XP3 canister filter sitting inside a Styrofoam cooler. All I would need to do is make a drain hole at a certain level, plug it & fill the cooler with ice.
Just needs bags of ice LOL.

Would adding more air pumps help the situation?

People used to make chillers with old mini-fridges, drilled through the sides with coils and coils of hose inside, and a slow pump. It isn't cheap, energy wise or materials-wise, but that is a DIY chiller.

Ultimately, the fish will adapt to the conditions of your apartment, or they won't. They're big fish with needs that are hard to meet in indoor aquariums, and no amount of fiddling will fix that. It's still only May, with the worst heat yet to come, for weeks and weeks.

I agree with Gary. I got a group of juvenile boesemani and last week the temperatures soared to 30 degrees in my tank. One died immediately and I moved the rest of the fish to a tank with 'only' 26 degrees. But that was still too much for these guys.

I will not try them again until I live somewhere else.
