New stocking ideas??? 35 hex and what to do. Empty New stocking ideas??? 35 hex and what to do.

Okay, I ordered the new 35 gallon hex tank.  Originally I was planning to put a pair of Angels in it but have since discovered I do not have a pair of angels!  I put the remaining one from the 40b community in with the remaining one in the 15 column and it went badly!!!  The known male occupant of the 15 was originally really pushy, but no contact and I still wasn't sure the other wasn't a female.  Well, came home and discovered the original huddled on his side under the driftwood.  I fed them to see what was up, he didn't come out so I wiggled the driftwood and out he came and was immediately assaulted by the imposter.  Needless to say, the imposter went back into the community tank.
I WOULD love to have Angels in this tank...I have visions of them floating around and I was really excited about the prospect.
soooo:::
Do I DARE get another older angel, trying for a female and put them together???  OR do I get several younger ones, and hope he doesn't beat them up.  He is normally not too aggressive, but he did kill the female that laid the eggs!
OR... Do I get five or six younger ones and hope they stay friendly in the 35 hex? I personally feel there isn't much space in a 35 for more than a pair in the length when they grow up... it has plenty of height but is a pretty small footprint.
OR... Do I just leave him by himself and go with something completely different in the new hex?  If so, you guys know me now, give me some suggestions, please.  This tank in going to be central in my living room so I want something really eye catching if possible!!!
OR... Do I just buy the beautiful pair that my LFS has for the 35... a black which I LOVE and a dark stripped one.  Pricey, but obtainable if I give up something else.
I have some time, the tank hasn't come in yet and will need to be cycled although I do have several sponge filters and some used substrate to help with that.  I also need to find a tank cover and suspect I will have a glass one made at my local hardware store.
Please help me... you guys have never steered me wrong yet!!!

Congratulations on the new tank.
The pair of Angels for 35 is my vote, but my knowledge is limited.
I can't really help you on the stocking part of it but can't wait to read what you do with it.

The angels will probably fill out the tall tanks the best. Along with a small school of larger tetras/barbs??

I've often thought about barbs but, frankly, when I read about all the nipping issues with them I get scared off... I have TWELVE tanks in my house, mostly community but three of them are single bettas, and EVERYONE gets along and I would hate to have some stress involved with my new ones.
My rainbows are the most active ones I have and they at least just flit around with no contact.  Right now one of the turquoise males is in FULL breeding colors with a HUGE yellow stripe down his head and back, and he is being a bit of a puke but the others keep out of his way. There is a big betta with them and he is actually funny when he swoops down, then retreats back to the cover of the plants. He's a woosie!
Well, except for my angel problems but they at least keep it to themselves.  I have a male betta in ALL my tanks except the endlers, the platies and the female bettas and they NEVER cause any issues...once in a while they will swoop down at someone but that it the total extent of it and that keeps life interesting.  AND, their fins and tails are now 100% healthy and beautiful, unlike when they were alone.  The ones alone are a bit more inclined to be pushy, however, which is why they are alone!
I just discovered there are now the most pretty turquoise glo tetras so I am after three of those today.  I have such mixed feelings about those GMF, but I already have them so I think three won't make any difference to my psychie.  All the kids (AND ADULTS!) that visit go right to them, of course, and I can point out the difference between being genetically modified and being dyed like the fruit tetras.

Well, Barbs are tossed into the "fin nippers" due to the popularity of the tiger barbs, Biulu has cherry barbs with her Male bettas without issue. its unfortunate the barb group has a bad rap due to a few species in the group. I'm sure others who have barbs will be able to chime in about which species are peaceful.

Well, after a bit of backordering, I got a call from the lfs today and my new 35 gal. hex has arrived!! I am using GREAT restraint and not picking it up until tomorrow. Only because there is no way I can get it from my car into my house and up on the stand alone, LOL. Restraint has nuthin to do with it!!!
Still don't know what I am putting in there but I am leaning toward a group of young angels OR a pair if I can find some that I really think are male and female. I am still mad I missed the pair they had for sale when I ordered the tank.
The problem with a pair of angels is that IF they do breed then I will have to deal with way, way too many angel fish. I am already overrun with platies...anyone need any????
I have filters and substrate already cycled so I will have to make up my mind one of these days! I also got the most beautiful piece of wood for it, while browsing in the lfs I spied it in one of their tanks... It is HUGE and really pretty and they gave me a deal on it. We had to pick off SEVEN plecos from it when they took it out of the tank!

If I had this tank, I would use it for Tootie and Fluffy, our angelfish! Maybe some cories, maybe not...but definitely my two angels to call it home! Looking forward to seeing what you decide on for inhabitants! New tanks are so fun! Smile

Sounds exciting planning the new tank. Angels would look great in that shape of tank. Looking forward to seeing the setup.

Just got back from the lfs to pick up my new tank. You wouldn't believe the BEAUTIFUL angels they got in today...amazing. And, pretty big for smaller ones. I will be getting mine Saturday or Sunday, I hope, or at least reserving them, depending on how the cycling goes.
Next thing I have to muddle thru... bigger ones at $15.99 (I was able to see sex differences in them), or babies (quarter size) at $5.99. I suspect the smaller ones will win, except I gotta have another black one!!!!!

Can't wait to see what you get. How do you tell the difference between the sexes?

All these tough decisions! I'm a big fan of starting with six small angels, as the mere fact they are two sexes doesn't mean they will pair up. They can be pickier than the average fish.
The downside to that is what to do with the other four, once a pair forms. It's a two tank project that can become a three tank project... then they have babies and the number of tanks expands, and you have my garage...

And my garage looks nice.

Yeah, some of the time I try to plan ahead, but...my whole house is now taken over by tanks!!!!!  The problems with being single, I guess.  No one is stopping me.  I have to stop now cuz there is no more room.
I got the tank up and it is MUCH bigger than I expected it would be.  I was just sitting here thinking how cool it would look to add a ten gallon hex... poppa bear, momma bear and baby bear!
I am going with the babies and hope the odd ones out will go in my other community tanks, so far the two big boys are doing great in the communities.
The tank is pretty cloudy this morning so all the used substrate and filters must be working already.

Okay, I added six Angels, about 1 inch diameter each. Most of them are veiltails, which I wasn't thrilled about, but they ARE pretty.
Now, whether to hope they pair up OR hope they don't and just ALL get along forever.
They are exploring the tank and I will get photos when they relax a bit.

Congrats on the angels. you'll have to keep an eye out and make sure to remove any angels that start to show any damaged fins or start handing in the corners or behind ornaments. These are usually signs of cichlid aggression (angels are cichlids) and 35g long term will only be able to house 1 pair. At 1 inch you'll be fine for a while, but once they get in the 2+ in body size, the territory battles will be on.
