Can I use tapwater in my Aquarium ?

Drinking water has many additives and we should know what is in the water to make it potable (drinkable). Generally this means chlorine. Many fish stores will offer you a water conditioner to add to the tapwater to neutralize the additives, but are you doing too much, or not enough ? What is chlorine and what other additives are in tapwater ? Will these harm my fish? What can I do to make sure that I am not harming my fish ?

Canada Aquaria experts advise on tips for conditioning water, in order to ensure safe water use for the aquarium.

Prime is my tapwater dechlorinator of choice. It comes in big and small bottles, and you get a good bang for your buck. It also converts ammonia to the less toxic ammonium for a 48 hour period, and has a similar detoxifying effect on nitrite.

A lot will depend on what your local municipality uses for treating their water. It can even differ within the same city. In my area the water comes from two sources, one is an old system that uses chlorine as it's main treatment, you can actually smell it when you turn on the tap. The other is a modern treatment plant that uses Ozone as it's primary treatment with only traces of Chlorine. Fortunately I get my water from the last one. I am able to pour right out of the tap into my tanks, even the saltwater ones.

Chloramine can be an issue as well if it's in your water, it has to be removed with a conditioner. It doesn't dissipate into the air like Chlorine does.
