Sorry I should have topped off the tank before taking it, it's like an rrr noise. I've cleaned it and I've replaced the impeller, any ideas?

Heh. I have the same "problem" with my filter.
I have found out that by changing the impeller shaft as well, it will help with the noise. I also lubrified the shaft with vaseline and it greatly reduced the noise.
